In the Beginning
When we look back on our lives, we can each think of several, pivotal moments that altered the course of our life. Often times, when we are living those moments, they seem unimportant and when we later reflect in life we realise its significance. For me, that first pivotal moment started in 2010 when I made the decision to study abroad in the “Land Down Under.”
With anything new, you feel a sense of doubt, fear, and excitement. I felt all of those things. I spent weeks going back and forth on my decision. I knew it was the opportunity of a lifetime but the knowledge of leaving home for months and heading to a country half a world away terrified me. I knew this would mean stepping out of my comfort zone and into the unknown. I would be leaving my family, my friends and everything I knew behind.
In the end, I managed to rope my best friend, Lauren, into coming with me. This made taking that step a little bit easier.
In truth, I wasn’t sure what I was expecting from Australia but Australia did not disappoint. In fact, Australia probably surpassed any expectation I would have had. Even my father, when he would visit me years later in the country I now call home, would tell me, ” I never understood why you picked Australia. Never, in all my years, did I have any desire to come here but now that I have, I can see why. Listen to an old man who has spent his whole life living in Los Angeles. Don’t ever come back.”
